Batman: Warner Bros. Turns On the Buzz

Buzz takes time to build -- even when you're a superhero -- which is exactly why Warner Bros. Studios is planting viral seeds for its new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, more than a year before its July 2008 release.

Warner Bros. began promoting The Dark Night last month -- despite the fact that it's still in production. An early bird, the moviemaker is chasing its box office worm with strategically placed posters, playing cards, and a handful of static microsites, all of which have been "defaced" by the movie's villain, the Joker. The microsites, in particular, are generating big buzz among Batman fans. The latest features a secret image that can only be revealed upon referring friends -- one at a time -- to the site.

Next to a signal in the sky, Warner Bros. has proven hands-down that word of mouth is the best way to buzz about a bat.
