Scoble and Israel: The Keynote
Shel Israel began his presentation by discussing his involvement with Power Point. Power Point he said separates one from an audience; he said that Naked Conversations is the opposite of Power Point. How did they decide to write the book on line? Israel thought he had "lost it." Until the traffic on his blog when Scoble announced it and convinced him otherwise.
They became the first to blog their book. They wanted feedback on everything from content to typos. People who speak to you, pro or con are the most passionate about your products. He emphasized that Blogs are not about technology.
Israel said that at Microsoft blogging created a culture of speaking openly about the company. Scoble's blogging changed the image of the company. It just happened. It wasn't planned. It was a geek talking to geeks.
As far as leaving Microsoft, Scoble said it was the essence of word of mouth. Scoble said he called 15 people and told them not to tell anyone. The word of mouth kicked off from there... and the Vloggercon Conference. One of the early Scoble posts, The Geeks on Saturday Night referenced a comment on Toby Bloomberg's Diva Marketing from Tris Hussey that wondered what the geeks were all doing up on Saturday night.
At 7pm, he said the calls started coming in asking for verification. WSJ, AP, Reuters started calling. Scoble remarked that the WOM network that has been built is very efficient. The lesson he says is the word of mouth network that has been built is a network of its own. He said, however that he did not lost control of the word of mouth. He posted that night. His first post was not a confirmation of his leaving Microsoft, but a comment on the word of mouth story. He seems to be keeping track of the story count.
They concluded their presentation by saying that in 2001/2002 the dawn of blogging was fostered by the building of the social network and build tools, the Enron backlash, and a dissatisfaction with what they called committee based marketing.
